Project: River Pipeline Project
The Hidalgo County Irrigation District No. 16 (HCID No. 16) diverts Rio Grande water to serve approximately 13000 acres and two municipal utilities. Water is lifted from the Rio Grande River to a concrete-lined main channel that was constructed on a fill of approximately 18 feet above natural ground. Over time, because of settlement in the channel, sections of the main channel were replaced with a 48-inch pipe. The 48-inch pipe severely restricted the delivery capacity to a point that river pumping was limited. Melden and Hunt, Inc. was commissioned to study the problem and to provide a design to correct the deficiency. The firm decided to lay a 60-inch pipe in parallel with the existing pipe sections. A 5000-foot section of 60-inch, Class 361 rubber joint concrete pipe was installed from the river pumping stations to the main channel. The district now has full pumping and delivery capacity with the system.
