Project: Rio Grande Flow Measurement Weir Project
The Hidalgo County Irrigation District No. 1 (HCID No. 1) diverts water through its river pump station to provide irrigation and raw water to approximately 50,000 acres and three municipal utilities. The District is required to maintain accurate records of the diversion for the State regulatory agency and for its own management records. Melden and Hunt, Inc. was commissioned to provide design and construction services for a device to provide accurate flow measurement. The firm decided to construct a sharp-crested weir that would be located in the main channel. The weir is capable of an instantaneous flow measurement with a range of 50 to 600 cubic feet per second. The instrument totalizer provides an accurate diversion record for a given reporting period. The concrete structure has a crest length of 40 feet. Energy dissipating features were included in the structure.
