Client: City of Pharr, Texas
Project: Bell and Cypress Lift Station/Force Main Upgrade-2002
The Bell and Cypress Lift Station serves the entire north sector of the City of Pharr, or approximately 60% of the City's wastewater flow. With the growth of the City, the existing lift station output could no longer keep up with the incoming flow, especially during wet weather conditions. The City commissioned Melden and Hunt, Inc. to prepare a study with recommendations. Our study showed that the force main and pump capacity combination severely limited the pump station output. We recommended that an existing deteriorated 14-inch asbestos cement force main be replaced with 18-inch PVC pipe. We also recommended that a new station be constructed adjacent to the existing station to provide space for more pumps. The new lift station has four 10-inch Gorman-Rupp self-priming pumps with a total output of 4000 GPM. Construction of the lift station was challenging because of the lack of space. We created a unified design with a wet well and dry well that allows space saving cassion construction techniques. Features include: architecturally pleasing design for the neighborhood, standby generator, and provision for future odor control equipment.
